Tips on Finding News Stories

Here are some tips to help you get the best search results.

  • To find news articles that contain all searched terms, type “AND” (in capital letters) between the terms.
    • Example: human AND rights AND violations will return results with “human,” “rights,” and “violations” somewhere in the news article.
  • To search for an exact phrase or name (sometimes known as a character string match), use quotation marks.
    • Example: “human rights” will return results that include the entire term.
  • To find news articles that contain at least one specified search term, type “OR” (in capital letters) between the terms.
    • Example: “human rights” OR “animal rights” will return results that contain either or both of these terms.
  • To exclude certain search terms, type “NOT” (in capital letters) before each term you wish to exclude.
    • Example: human NOT rights will return results that include the word “human” but not the word “rights.”
  • To create more complex searches that group certain elements together, use parentheses.
    • Example: research AND (“human rights” OR “animal rights”) will return results that contain the word “research” and either the term “human rights” or the term “animal rights.”
  • To find variations of a word, follow the root with an asterisk.
    • Example: terror* will return results that include words such as “terror,” “terrorism,” “terrorist,” and “terrorists.”
