Why Do We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows?
In this video, psychologist Melanie Joy discusses “carnism,” which she defines as “the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat some animals but not others.” As she makes clear, animal agriculture is indeed a form of culture, and understanding the psychology of carnism can benefit people, animals, and the environment.
Overlooked: The Lives of Animals Raised for Food
Narrated by James Cromwell, this video documents the inhumane conditions experienced by animals in U.S. factory farms. Paul Shapiro of the Humane Society of the United States provides commentary and discusses practical steps that people can take to help end factory farming.
Undercover Investigation at Hy-Line Hatchery
Recorded at the world’s largest hatchery for egg-laying breed chicks, this undercover video documents the systematic cruelty that newborn chicks endure, including rough handling, mutilation, and killing male chicks by dropping them into a grinding machine while still alive. According to the video, these practices are not exceptions but are “widespread within the industry.” For a more general Mercy for Animals video, see Farm to Fridge: The Truth Behind Meat Production (warning: contains graphic content).
